Treat the warning as urgent.
Vehicles communicate excessive engine temperature in different ways. You may see a red thermometer symbol, a message such as “engine hot,” a gauge climbing toward the hot zone, reduced engine power or steam coming from the front of the vehicle. Check the exact warning in the owner’s manual, but do not keep driving while waiting to see whether it becomes worse.
Ease off the accelerator, turn off the air conditioning and move toward a safe place to stop. Use your hazard lights when appropriate. Traffic safety comes first: do not stop in an active travel lane if the vehicle can still reach a safer shoulder, parking lot or exit.
If the warning remains on, the gauge is in the hot zone, power is reduced, or steam is visible, park safely and turn the engine off. Continuing to operate an overheating engine can cause severe damage.
Do not open a hot cooling system.
Engine coolant operates under pressure and can be hot enough to cause serious burns. Never remove a radiator cap, pressure cap or pressurized coolant-reservoir cap while the engine and cooling system are hot. Do not lean over a steaming engine compartment or place your hands near an electric cooling fan, which may start unexpectedly.
Opening the hood may allow heat to escape, but only do so when you can approach safely and there is no fire, heavy steam or spraying fluid. If you smell fuel, see flames or believe the vehicle may be on fire, move everyone away and call 911.
Let the vehicle cool before looking.
Cooling time varies with the vehicle, weather and severity of the problem. Do not use a fixed number of minutes as proof that the system is safe to open. Follow the owner’s manual. Once the vehicle is fully cool, a visual check around the ground and engine compartment may reveal a puddle, split hose or loose belt, but a missing visible leak does not mean the problem is resolved.
Do not pour cold water onto a hot engine. Rapid temperature change can damage components, and adding the wrong coolant or opening the wrong reservoir can create another problem. If coolant is low, use only the type and procedure specified by the manufacturer—and only after the system has cooled completely.
Why engines overheat.
Low coolant is one possibility, but overheating is a symptom rather than a complete diagnosis. A leak, inoperative cooling fan, sticking thermostat, weak water pump, damaged drive belt, restricted radiator, trapped air or internal engine problem can all reduce the system’s ability to control temperature.
The conditions surrounding the warning help the diagnostic process. Note whether it happened in traffic or at highway speed, whether the heater stopped producing heat, whether a warning light appeared, and whether you noticed an odor, leak or recent cooling-system repair. A technician still needs to test the system rather than guess from one symptom.
Can you drive after it cools?
Do not resume driving if coolant is leaking, steam returns, the temperature warning remains on, the gauge climbs again, the engine runs poorly or the owner’s manual directs you to stop. Arrange a tow rather than risking engine damage or another roadside shutdown.
Even if the gauge returns to normal, the cause should be identified. Temperature may fall temporarily after the engine is shut off while the underlying fault remains. A repeat overheating event can happen quickly.
Preventive checks that matter.
Have unexplained coolant loss, sweet odors, stains and temperature changes inspected early. Follow the vehicle manufacturer’s coolant type and service interval. Cooling-system caps, hoses, belts, fans and coolant condition should be evaluated as part of appropriate maintenance, especially before towing or long summer travel.
